February 1 Deadline for NC Poetry Contest!

Check out this contest fellow parents (sorry, kids)! I’m thinking about submitting some of my own work and encourage you to do the same….

NORTH CAROLINA POETRY SOCIETY’s POETRY CONTEST DEADLINE is February 1, 2012

The North Carolina Poetry Society invites submissions to its nine 2012 adult poetry contests, open to NCPS members and non-members and (except for the Poet Laureate contest) to both NC residents and non-residents:

THOMAS H. McDILL AWARD: any form, any style; maximum 70 lines.

CALDWELL NIXON JR. AWARD: written for children ages 2-12, any form, any style; maximum 36 lines.

JOANNA CATHERINE SCOTT AWARD: traditional forms (except sestinas); maximum 36 lines.

MARY RUFFIN POOLE AMERICAN HERITAGE AWARD: any form, any style on theme of American heritage, brotherhood/sisterhood, nature; maximum of 36 lines.

KATHERINE KENNEDY McINTYRE LIGHT VERSE AWARD: any form, any style; maximum 36 lines.

GRIFFIN-FARLOW AWARD: Haiku.

POETRY OF COURAGE AWARD: any form, any style on theme of courage or crisis; maximum 36 lines.

POETRY OF LOVE AWARD: any form, any style; maximum 36 lines.

POET LAUREATE AWARD: a serious poem, any subject, any style, maximum of 110 lines. Open to poets currently residing in NC. The winning poem will be selected by the North Carolina Poet Laureate.

New Year’s Eve Local Events

Hey folks! I was going to write this really great post about local NYE events around town, but I ran out of time. So here are a bunch of links for events. Sorry for the late notice. You can imagine our festive adventures are much more low-key/family oriented than party party (hence the not planning ahead). Hope you all have a great one!

New Years Eve Party in the Park
Saturday December 31, 2011 | 6:30 PM – 12:30 AM | Festival Park

Bring in the New Year with live performances on the Bud Light Stage. The stage will include a live feed from Times Square.

This family focused event will also have a children’s area hosted by The Partnership For Children, that includes craft activities, inflatable fun (weather provided), an early New Year countdown at 8:45 with a firework show for the little ones that can’t make it till midnight. This area proves to be fun for all ages!

November 5: North Carolina Cotton Festival (Dunn)

13th Annual Touchstone Energy NC Cotton Festival – November 5, 2011 promises to be even more exciting this year.

With Downtown Renovations going on, this year’s Festival will be moving to a new location. Dunn’s Tart Park Recreational Park will be host to the 13th Annual Touchstone Energy NC Cotton Festival on Saturday, November 5th.  The Dunn Shriner’s Car Show will also be at the park. The Committee is excited and working hard at making this year’s Festival one of the best ever. Plans are still in the making as we move forward with preparations for one of the largest and best festivals in this area.

October 8: 99th Farmer’s Day Celebration (Coats)

Saturday, October 8, 2011.  Included in the festivities will be “All Day Stage Entertainment”, “Vendors of all types,” “Parade”,  “Car & Truck Show”, “Farm Equipment Show”, “Arts, Crafts & Cooking Contest”, “Cornhole Tournament”, “Huge Kid’s Park”, “Kid’s Bicycle/Tricycle Parade” & “Street Dance”.  Many additional attractions are being adding as we approach the Festival Date.

Over the years this Festival has grown to include a Gospel Concert on Friday evening, Golf Tournament, Wagon Train and Camping, Car Show, Farm Equipment Show, Judged Items, all day Stage Entertainment, Cornhole Tournament, over 90 vendors, Street Dance, Pig Cook-Off, etc.  This past year we entertained over 16,000 visitors.  The Kid’s Park was added several years ago and has grown every year.  Last year it was packed all day with children of all ages.

September 23: Jordan Lake Evening Canoe Paddle

Jordan Lake State Recreation Area will be having an Evening Canoe Paddle on Friday, September 23, 2011

Join a Ranger for an evening of paddling the sub impoundment (Weaver Creek) body of water near Ebenezer boat ramp. Paddle will begin at the Wildlife Access Area directly off of Beaver Creek Rd. (State Road 1008) approx. 3 miles south of Hwy 64, just past Pea Ridge Road. This paddle is recommended for all abilities. All equipment provided (life jackets, paddles, and canoes). You may want to bring binoculars to view wildlife and if we are lucky, Bald Eagles too! Dress according to the weather and plan to get a little wet. Paddle may be cancelled due to the weather (rain or high winds). Please note, there are no restrooms at this site. If you have your own gear/canoe/kayak and would like to join us, please do!

Reservations must be made in advance and ages 10 and over are welcome to participate.

September 15-25: Cumberland County Fair

The Cumberland County Fair will be coming to the Crown Center Expo in Fayetteville, NC September 15-25, 2011. You can purchase tickets online at http://www.crowncoliseum.com/events/list_of_events.aspx or visit the Fair’s website at http://www.cumberlandcountyfair.org/. There will be a ton of fun things to do this year!

September 17: Check out the Lillington Fall Festival

The Lillington Fall Festival is scheduled for Saturday, September 17th from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. in downtown Lillington. The event offers shopping options that include local arts and crafts as well as commercial products, food vendors, fun activities for the children and all day entertainment.
